Tenerife is indeed a continent in miniature... and more. Created following massive volcanic explosions, parts of the island’s landscape are often described as ‘lunar’ and this is especially true in Mount Teide National Park

It is this dramatic moon-like scenery of bizarre natural rock formations that draws in the crowds of holidaymakers eager to walk on land that was once literally a hotbed of lava.

First you must make the journey upwards which can only be made by car. Check out some great deals on quality car hire with Discount Rent A Car.

Halfway to Teide you will encounter Spain's highest town, Vilaflor. At over 4,593 feet (1,400 metres) above sea level, is a quiet place surrounded by pine and almond trees, with outstanding traditional Canarian architecture including the beautiful parish church.

Continuing up the mountain road, finally you will reach the national park and this is when the lunar landscape unfolds before your eyes. Suddenly, everywhere you look there are extraordinary rock formations and a weird and wonderful setting guaranteed to take your breath away. There are also several places to stop along the way to take in the sights and photograph this fantastic scenery.

To truly appreciate this surreal terrain, Spain-Tenerife recommends that you take a few hours to thoroughly explore this area. So, pack a bag with warmer clothes as it can get colder because of the altitude, enjoy some refreshments at one of the picnic areas and make a day of it. Before your adventure, perhaps check out this superb location on our Google Map of Tenerife.
